Weekly Character Discussion: Austin

Every week we'll have a new thread for a different character; this week's is Austin. The purpose of this thread is to give both positive and negative feedback about the writing, characterization, and portrayal of the character. As always, the daily thread is the place to discuss specific episodes and scenes; this thread is for any and all thoughts on the character, the character's history, family relationships, and what you'd like to see for him/her. Feel fee to post pictures and clips if you'd like.

We'll be locking these at the end of each week and giving another character a turn.

This is not a place for fanbase fighting; please know before posting that there will be people in here who disagree with you, and if you have a different opinion that one stated, please just state your own respectfully. The point of this thread is to get feedback from everyone, good or bad.

I'm liking Patrick Muldoon, but to me when I think "Austin Reed" I think of Austin Peck. I also feel like the show has kind of glossed over the Sami/Austin history because most that occurred during AP's years. Patrick's Austin feels so disconnected from everything that happened from 95-06 imo.

I like Austin. I've always liked him and Carrie together. He seems a little too old for her now, though.

AP's Austin was dumb as a box of rocks.

Come on Ron, We are counting on YOU !!

Austin has to be the dumbest character to ever exist on Days. I have to admit that I LOVED PM's Austin ONCE UPON A TIME. I am not liking him this time around though. I wonder if it's his looks, his voice (annoying as hell), or just the fact that in the end I got 'use' to AP's Austin and frankly in this Abby story, I can see HIM in it and I can see the attraction that Abby would have with AP's Austin over PM's.

I don't know what it is, but the character just seems useless to me at this point.

I never really cared for Austin when Peck was playing him. Something about Muldoon, though, has changed my opinion. Austin has quickly become a favorite of mine since he's came back in September. I think it's because Muldoon brings something to the character that Peck didn't. Peck was just a pretty face with lacking talent and charisma. Muldoon is a pretty face with charisma, although he may also lack talent as well. He has other things to bring. I think it's the way he delivers his lines. He puts some personal traits into Austin that Peck never did.

HAhaha I actually really like his voice....has a little accent I think can't put my finger on it. I like that it's unique and imitatable (hope that's a word) I heard Bryan Dattilo imitate it once and was LMAO. It's not your typical robust "I'm a soap opera actor" voice. Sometimes its these little things that give a character their own stamp and uniqueness.

I loved Austin since he was playing his piano too loud and had Carrie banging on the walls to get him to shut it. I especially love PM's version. I don't like how they have him be so easily manipulated by women, he was sort of raised by Curtis Reed and he is Kate's first born why oh why must he be so dumb? I would love for him to stay and be actually used to full potential by the writers regardless of whether or not Caustin make it.

I don't remember PM's Austin the first time around, only AP's version and I thought he was as dull as dishwater and dumber than dirt. I wasn't impressed with PM when he first came back on the show but I have to admit he's growing on me, especially when he's in scenes with other characters besides Carrie.

His voice irks me to no end, he sounds like hes constantly going through puberty. I recall with AP I couldnt take the character seriously because he had this constant ' duhhh' face going on. PM in the early 90s was hot and likeable. I am, however, enjoying PM this time around only because i look forward to how he is going to handle the Abby storyline. He bored me prior to that with this ' I'm a forensic acct' storyline :frustration:

Sami who?

I'm indifferent to Austin. I don't hate him, but at the same time I really don't care about him. I'm totally new to Austin since I began watching DAYS only a few years ago, but so far he has done nothing to impress me. On the other hand, I will admit that I've been enjoying the Austin/Abby storyline. I definitely don't want him to become romantically involved with her, but I am interested in how Austin is going to handle Abby going all "fatal attraction" on him.

Judging from past experiences......not good. He has a brain, I wish he'd actually use it.

I don't really dislike Austin (he's not being overly propped, and other characters aren't being sacrificed for his benefit at least, I don't think), but I'd rather air time were used for more interesting characters. I think if he's killed off during this Abby crazy time, it could be a good murder mystery. But it looks like that won't happen.

Oh Austin ... always soooooo clueless. :teehee:

Anyways, I've never hated the character. Just hated him with Sami, and then I'm not really a Carrie fan and Austin without Carrie was never really an option (at least while I was watching). He is however one of the most loyal characters in Salem, kinda like a puppy. I wouldn't lose sleep if he left Salem, but I hope that they don't kill him off. He'd be a great background player.

I have very little opinion of Austin as an individual. I definitely prefer PM in the role, and I do like him with CC. I think they have a very natural, real chemistry.

I mentioned this recently in the context of current story, but the more I think about it, the more I realize how it's true for most of his character's existence. The guy is such a jerk, and somehow it doesn't come across that way. This is the guy that woke up with his wife's sister and didn't bother to mention it even when sister crashed his wedding with news she was pregnant. I guess he didn't really have a choice, but he then agreed to marry that sister while she wore her sister's wedding dress and played their song. He then ran that sister over, and felt so bad that he felt the need to be by her side at all times despite his wife's warnings that she was lying. He went as far as to have a wedding with her when he wasn't even in love with. Then when that went to hell, he just turned around and married the other sister. And if that weren't enough, he spent MONTHS on the run with the sister. Then he entered into another relationship with her and almost married her again! Then he came back to town and only dated her because her sister wasn't around. He was going to marry her.

And now look at him. I mean...these aren't just a couple of isolated incidents of being a jerk. He may be a bigger prick than most of the villains in Salem...mostly because he's considered a good guy.

But still. I don't really dislike the guy, lol.

Gone, But Not Forgotten!

Was HOT, now NOT! PM can leave anytime, Salem doesn't need a forensic accountant. I always thought that PM would pair up with MA and investigate John's embezzlement SL....I think they still can, looks like this Abby-Austin is longer going to be as neurotic, as first thought.

Austin was never really a favorite character, but I was watching when PM was on the first time so I will always associate him as Austin. I didn't hate the character, but I wasn't really attached to him either. He was just there. I always thought Carrie was too young for him. Now it doesn't seem like such an issue even though he does look older. I have to say that I AM enjoying Austin more now that Abby is going a little crazy. Today's episode made me laugh a couple of times just because of the way he was acting around Abby/Jack/Carrie. He looked like he was about to crap his pants. I'll be interested to see what happens when Jack finds out about this whole mess. Jack/Austin scenes should be good.

To me the character of Austin is just there. Never really cared for PM as Austin before, and I feel that way this time around, too. He looks too old for the role, like he could be Carrie's older brother or step-dad, and his voice drives me up a wall. I wouldn't mind it a bit if he left the show.

I didn't really like (or dislike) Austin when he was first on and I stopped watching for a long time shortly after that. So he's kind of new to me. I think the character has potential. When he first came back in September, it was jarring to see how much the actor had aged and it took him a fair bit of time to get his feet under him, acting wise. But either I'm used to his style now or he's gotten better. I don't mind him. He doesn't "bring it" for me but he doesn't irritate me either. He can stay.

Out of the entire mess, Austin is the one that gets most of my sympathy. While he is keeping a secret from Carrie, he is being duped by Abby. Also, if Carrie and Rafe would have kept their lips to themselves, he wouldn't have gotten drunk which means he also would not have been kissing Abby. So, yeah.

Over the years, though, he has seemed like an idiotic jerk. He keeps falling for basically the same schemes and such. That aspect of him is a bit old and tired. I would love to see him get more of a backbone and become a little jaded. Just a little, though.

As for which Austin I prefer, I have to say I prefer the current one. Back in the day, I saw his work on Melrose Place. He did good work(much better than now) and was hot back then. While he is not as hot, and his work isn't as good, I still see the old PM in him. He is improving. That is why I want his character to have a more of an edge. While I don't want Austin to become a rapist(like his MP character), PM can play darker roles decently well.
